How Does Wind Energy Work?

Mankind has been harnessing the power of the wind for centuries and wind brought our ships to new continents. But, it took a while before we learned to create electrical energy using the wind. Today, we can use the energy of the wind for various other purposes thanks to the electromagnetic devices constructed to create electrical energy – generators. The kinetic energy generated by the movement of air moving across the blades of the wind turbine is used by the generator which, in turn, produces electricity. This energy is then used to power the various devices we use in our homes.

Types Of Wind Turbines

Today we know of two basic types of wind turbines. The horizontal-axis turbines, which are similar to propellers mounted on airplane motors, are the more common type, seen mostly on tall towers so they can exploit the stronger winds at heights. The other type is the vertical-axis turbines, which resemble egg beaters. They not very common because they are not as efficient as their horizontally positioned counterparts.

What Are The Advantages Of Wind Turbines?

  • Wind Turbines Save Power

By using the limitless energy of the wind,  wind turbines help to reduce the dependability of humanity on fossil fuels. The energy of the wind is also clean and practically free.

  • Cheap Energy

The only costs involved with the operation of the wind turbine are the maintenance costs. This way, the total cost of wind turbine installation and maintenance is quickly returned through the value of the energy generated.

  • Green Energy

Wind turbines are absolutely environmentally friendly. They do not emit any gases which can have a negative effect on the environment, nor their operation demands environmentally dangerous substances.

  • Self-Sufficiency

Since the wind is a global phenomenon, it’s power can be used to generate power in the most remote areas of the world. This allows independence from power grids and other common sources of energy.

Things to Consider Before Installing a Wind Turbine

The main issues concerning the usage of wind turbines in residential areas are the noise level and the visual impact the turbine can have on the surroundings. Both of these can be a problem with the other households in the vicinity. Also, some people also may find the flicker generated by the working turbine annoying.
