While the Windmax HY 400 is not going to blow you away with the level of craftsmanship, it certainly is a good starting model. It features a five-blade design with a maximum power output of 500W at 12 volts. Our research has shown that you might get as mush as 18 amps at wind speed of 6 meters per second. Not bad for an entry-level turbine.
The whole setup is lightweight, at around 60 pounds and the idea is to mount it in an elevated position to catch the most wind. The whole package, however, does not come with a mounting pole, so the buyer has to solve this problem by himself.
Even though the manufacturer states that this wind turbine is made of quality materials and full of hi-tech solutions to keep it maintenance free and durable at high winds, there are certain issues with the Windmax turbine which we caught on the first glance. For instance, the turbine does feature electromagnetic brakes so it can automatically stop spinning at high wind speeds and it is made of thermoplastic materials which are supposed to make it go round and round safely, without fear of cracking or breaking, but is it really so?
Our test analysts have noticed relatively modestly built components which do not give faith to the stability of the turbine under pressure. There was a clear bending of the blades at above average speeds which raises serious questions about the efficiency, at first, and then, of course, about the longevity of the product. Also, the set up of the wind turbine could have been envisioned a bit better. The owner’s manual has only a few pages and the engineering could have been done so as to make the installation a little more simple. This is why we recommend a person with an electrical background for help with installation.
Should I Get One?
If you are a renewable energy enthusiast (and we should all be, for that matter) who is still an entry-level user with a couple of solar panels on the roof, this turbine is a great way to get you started so you can see how the wind power generation systems work.
Best used as a backup device or an additional source of energy, the WindMax turbine is not meant to replace your main source of electric energy, but to act as a nice, clean and free way to generate a little bit of power and as a good place to start expanding your potentials.
